Adopting a Sociomaterial Perspective for the Analysis of Digital Public Spheres
This paper argues that theorizing computer-mediated communications as political engagement within a sociomaterial perspective, an understanding attentive to the mutual constitution of the social and material, allows researchers to conceptually analyze the unique political practices afforded by information and communication technologies and their function within a public sphere. It argues that a hierarchical view on data-information-knowledge-wisdom – dominant in the IS discipline – is limited and that numerous other attempts to conceptualize information are worthy of exploration. The paper thus reviews literature on conceptualizing and theorizing infor...

متن کاملTowards a Conceptualization of Sociomaterial Entanglement
In knowledge representation, socio-technical systems can be modeled as multiagent systems in which the local knowledge of each individual agent can be seen as a context. In this paper we propose formal ontologies as a means to describe the assumptions driving the construction of contexts as local theories and to enable interoperability among them. In particular, we present two alternative conce...
متن کاملBeyond Sociomaterial: An Alternative Approach to Theorizing About Digital Artifacts
Information Systems researchers often study artifacts in light of their purpose, use, and effects. Their research is often conducted relying on a socio-technical or sociomaterial based ontology. This paper explores h...
